These are just a few of our Outreach Projects & Events
FIRST LEGO League Jr, FIRST Lego League and FIRST Tech Challenge Teams
Four years ago, we formed a partnership with our school to help connect Bloomfield Hills schools students into FIRST robotics. This partnership with our schools and our FRC team, promotes a centralized approach to help all students that want to participate in robotics join a team. The school helps us with marketing and registering students through the recreation website. They also help us maintain the team financial accounts. FRC 2834 assists the teams by registering them with FIRST, purchasing their kits, grouping students by team and conducting mentor training. Many of our FRC students mentor FLL and FTC teams weekly during the season. This year, FRC 2834 & Bloomfield Hills Schools had over 300 students in grades K-8 participate on 48 school teams. The most in Michigan!
Our team is proud to welcome FIRST teams to events hosted by the Black Hawks. In the last three years, our team ran the Bloomfield Bash FLL Jr Expo and the Bloomfield Bash FLL district event to give FLL Jr and FLL teams an opportunity to participate locally without having to travel too far. This year we hosted the FLL Michigan State Championship at the Bloomfield Hills High School (BHHS) and we will host again in 2017. Finally, we host the FRC Kick off and provide a workshop on scouting as part of this event.
In 2015, we started our advocacy team by traveling to Washington DC to participate in the National Advocacy Conference. The conference goal is to "Make it Loud" on Capitol Hill! Last year, we returned to DC to encourage our federal representatives to pass legislation to fund the Every Student Succeeds Act, for after school STEM clubs. It passed! This year, our advocacy sub-team has reached out to all levels of government spreading FIRST and STEM initiatives from school board, township, county, state. We recently met with our district representative Mike McCready to help him understand the FIRST Michigan Bill and the importance of this legislation to not only the Black Hawks but all FRC teams in Michigan.
Full STEAM Ahead!
This year, our team started a student produced and edited cable TV show, Full Steam Ahead. Patterned after Mythbusters, it is dedicated to sharing STEAM ideas, creating fun labs and exploring STEAM professions all with the goal of spreading FIRST to kids in elementary and middle school. One of the most fun parts of the show, is the challenge question where we ask students in grades 3-5 a question. They have to submit their answer via our website, We send a prize patrol to the classroom of winning student!
